Thank you for visiting my site. I'm Eric Rosenthal and the most important thing that you should know about me is that I care about what I’m doing. Whether I’m a teacher, a husband, an athlete, a brother or a student, I’m always striving to do my best and make a positive impact on those around me. This has lead me on a beautiful adventure and I’m grateful for all that I've experienced and been able to accomplish in my 29 years. I come from the United States but I've spent the past seven years teaching English language learners in South Korea, Vietnam, and now China.
Starting in 2008, I graduated Cum Laude from Binghamton University with a B.A in English, Literature and Rhetoric. It is my sincere love of the language arts that drives me as a teacher, the hope to share my passion with my students. Before leaving for South Korea in 2009, I completed a Cambridge CELTA certificate because I felt that my future students deserved a teacher with at least an introductory professional training. In South Korea I gained a sense of professional identity, met many great friends, learned a new language and acquired a deeper understanding of diversity than I had ever held before.
While in South Korea I met my wife, Sumin, and this has truly been the best result of my decision to teach internationally. We moved to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in late 2012 and I began as a teacher at the Korean International School of Ho Chi Minh City in early 2013. I worked with KIS Ho Chi Minh City from 2013 until 2015. This was the teaching job that cemented my love of the profession and lead me to pursue a professional teaching credential and Master of Education degree. At KIS I taught one homeroom class in the core subjects throughout the school year. This was the first time that I worked closely with the same group of students for an extended period of time. I cherish the relationships and understandings that developed during this time.
In February 2014 I enrolled with The College of New Jersey and began coursework for a secondary teaching credential in the State of New Jersey, in the United States. I completed the credential and Master of International Education degree in July 2015. This was a great experience for me because I consider myself a lifelong learner and really enjoyed being a student. I was very satisfied with the program and feel that it has given me a deeper knowledge of how to meet the needs of my students. Going into the program I had teaching experience but lacked extensive pedagogical training. Now I have both practical classroom experience and a firm pedagogical foundation to stand on in my teaching practice. In August of 2015, Sumin and I made the journey to Guangzhou, China to work with Ulink College. This completed my transition from the primary to secondary classroom and I have learned so much while working with my Chinese students. I am proud to see my teaching practice broaden with this new experience.
I am an easy going, empathetic person. I pride myself on being accessible to the people in my life and I feel that this is one of my strongest skills in the classroom. I value close friendships and like to stay active. When I’m not working I’m usually playing basketball, soccer, or softball in some kind of recreational league. I’m a lifelong running enthusiast and have completed both half and full marathons. Although we live in a giant metropolis, my wife and I take every opportunity we can to go on hiking and camping trips. We both love to travel and especially enjoy trying the many fine foods of the world.
I believe that as an international teacher I am flexible and can adapt to a variety of situations. I care about my students. I care about the quality of their work. That will not change. My methods and understandings will evolve but my desire inspire great work will always be the basis of my work.
